Six years ago, just a week after participating in President Obama's inauguration, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was gunned down in a Chicago park. Following her death, Hadiya’s friends and family encouraged people across the country to take a stand against gun violence by wearing orange. Due to their efforts, orange has now become the color of gun violence.
This week on the fifth anniversary of #WearOrange, we at the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) will be doing just that.
We will wear orange for Hadiya. We will wear orange for the nearly 100 people on average who die from gun violence each day. We will wear orange because we know that gun violence comes in many different forms -- from gun suicide to police brutality to school shootings to daily gun violence in neighborhoods across the country.
We will wear orange because we know all gun violence deserves our attention. And we are working on all possible solutions to this national epidemic.
We hope you will wear orange and stand with CSGV to make gun violence rare and abnormal.
