Pinto Gallery ART & AIDS: 35 Years of Survival November 15 – December 30  Co-curated by The GMHC, Osvaldo Perdomo, and David Livingston, this year’s exhibition honors long-term survivors living with HIV and AIDS as we mark the 35th anniversary of Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC). Since 2001, GMHC’s Wellness Center has provided an opportunity to showcase artwork created by their clients. This exhibition acknowledges the journeys of long-term survivors, many of whom were on the front lines in the early days of the epidemic, and what their lives are like today as they enter their “golden years” and seek creative outlets to channel feelings and emotions. While the epidemic’s landscape has changed and many more treatment options are now available, HIV and AIDS remain a potent threat, creating the potential to forever alter the course of a human life.  Through this exhibition, we hope to build more awareness about those living with HIV and AIDS,  as well as help decrease the stigma that tragically remains connected to them. more

Lohman Gallery BARBARA HAMMER: Evidentiary Bodies October 7, 2017 - January 28, 2018 Bringing together both known and previously unseen works of film and video, installations, works on paper, and material from her archive, this exhibition addresses critical themes that appear in Barbara Hammer’s work, including: lesbian representation, subjectivity and sexuality; intimacy and sensation; and conditions and maintenance of life and illness. more

Museum Façade SILENCE=DEATH COLLECTIVE Through June, 2018 Each year, the Museum will invite an artist or group of artists to create work to cover the façade of the Museum. This year, the site-specific installation by the Silence=Death Collective, adapts the iconic poster used by Act Up during the AIDS Pandemic in 1980s calling attention to the lack of action by the United States government. more

Anthology Film Archives BARBARA HAMMER: LESBIAN HANDS Film Screening: Thursday, December 14, 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm Anthology Film Archives we will be hosting a program that focuses on films and videos marked by the intimacy of the body and of touch. The program asks viewers to pay close attention to the use of hands, and the relationship between touch and Hammer’s process of film/video making. Whether conveying the pleasure of touch in SYNC TOUCH or the fear of touch in SNOW JOB, this program examines the sensation of contact. As Hammer says, “This sight and touch union became the basis of my personal lesbian aesthetic.”  more

The Metrograph BARBARA HAMMER: Mischief & Play A selection of Barbara Hammer short films with Barbara Hammer in person Sunday, December 17, 3:45-5:45PM Since the late 1960s, pioneering experimental filmmaker and artist Barbara Hammer has been making films that explore lesbian subjectivity and sexuality, politics and representation, and visceral manifestations of pleasure and discomfort, using the camera as an extension of her body to see, touch, explore, and often laugh. Presented in collaboration with The Academy Film Archive, this program of shorts highlights Hammer’s use of play as a form of disobedience and resistance to institutionalized normalities. The screening will be introduced by Barbara Hammer. Join us after the screening for a celebration and signing of Truant: Photographs, 1970-1979, a book of never-before-seen work from Barbara Hammer, documenting travels, lovers, moments of community and kinship between her collaborators on set, private and public performances, friends, strangers. Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, Australia THE UNFLINCHING GAZE: photo media & the male figure October 14 - December 3 The Unflinching Gaze: photo media & the male figure surveys how the male figure has been depicted by Australian and international artists in photo media over the last 140 years. In partnership with the Leslie-Lohman Museum this exhibition features over 60 works from the Leslie-Lohman Museum's collection. It includes historic and contemporary fine art photography and film, fashion photography, pop videos and homoerotic art. Images range from the beautiful to the banal to the confounding. more
