Featuring over 60 artists working together to build an immersive environment for reflection and creativity, Day of the Dead at SOMArts insists that we honor the people and places that have been lost.
Now in its 18th year at SOMArts, this year’s theme, Remembrance and Resistance emphasizes the importance of mourning in the context of resistance struggles. Since its inception, Day of the Dead at SOMArts has offered a space for community reflection and remembrance, refusing to forget those who have been lost to police brutality, gentrification and displacement, and environmental destruction. Now more than ever, it’s imperative to honor the dead and reflect on their legacies.
Co-curated by father and son team René and Rio Yañez, Día de los Muertos at SOMArts embodies René's over 30-year career of community-building art and activism in San Francisco.
Help us celebrate this community undertaking with an exhibition unveiling next Friday, October 6, $12–15 sliding scale admission, featuring music by Caribbean fusion band LA GENTE and multi-disciplinary performance from La Mezcla.
