Initially this painting is based on a series of paintings I did several years ago that are about how one views life. I used the idea from a saying that asks, "Is the glass half empty or half full." I guess this is a simile or a metaphor for optimism versus pessimism. Nathan, the model is a former student of mine who married one of my other students. He's a pretty positive guy and couldn't stop laughing during the photo shoot that I made the painting from.
This painting was influenced by a pretty famous painting by Velazquez called the "Water Carrier of Seville"
The light and shadow or "chiaroscuro" and "tenebrism" of this painting are some of the things that I tried to use. I really like how Velazquez paints clear glasses of water so I've incorporated that into it as well.
This painting is kind of large but don't worry! The canvas is wrapped around the edges and painted and the stretcher bars are extra thick.
Here's a video I made for my students when I taught art Art History about the painter.
