Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts
The Arrowmont Artists-in-Residence Program was established in 1991. The program provides early career, self-directed artists time, space and support to experiment and develop a new body of work in a creative supportive community environment of 160 rotating visiting workshop artists/instructors and hundreds of students. The program encourages early career artists who embrace community and enjoy working in a team environment to apply.

My residency experience was a total immersion in an art environment. It came at a critical step in my career and it pushed me forward. Access to the library, the gallery, teaching opportunities, the rotating workshop faculty members, and students all in one location was an education in itself — something one can’t have in an at-home studio.
Arrowmont’s Residency Program provides emerging and transitioning artists the necessary time, space, and support to experiment, explore, and develop new work within a creative community of visiting artists. The eleven-month program offers residents a wide variety of opportunities to further develop their skills as professional artists and educators.
Facilities & Services
- Housing: Private bedroom in a shared housing facilityThe 5 artists-in-residence share a furnished house, and each artist has a private bedroom and bath.
- Meals: Some meals are providedAll meals are provided when the main kitchen is operating (approx. 7 months out of 11) and vegetarian meals are available. A private full kitchen is located in the residency housing facility.

- Additional studio information:All 5 studios are private, 18'x 13', with central heat & air, sky-lighted with work tables, shelving and sink provided. An additional large outdoor covered work area, a shared bathroom, and storage area are provided. Residents are responsible for their own personal tools and equipment; however, residents may have access to specialized equipment in Arrowmont’s main studios when not in use. Two electric kilns, a lathe and band saw are provided for the ceramics and wood residents use.
- Other facilities and services: Large living room, dining room and covered decks surrounding the housing facility provide common room for meeting space; pay washer and dryer facilities connected to housing facility. Computer, printer, fax and scanner are provided for the residents in their common living area. The house computer is high speed access with a wireless signal broadcast. A trolley service is available in town, though residents will find having their own means of transportation more efficient. Smoking permitted outdoors only.
Residency Fees
Artists are responsible for: application fee - $25; $175 refundable damage/security deposit; food (during the approx. 4 months the main kitchen is closed); materials and personal needs.
Stipends / other support
The organization provides: housing, meals for 7 months, studio space, program administration, etc. General stipend - $300/month. An additional $800 in professional development opportunity funds can be used for travel, conferences, workshops, etc., during the 11-month residency (proposals must be submitted and approved). Trabue Family Scholarship for Women - $1,500 awarded based on need. Other scholarship opportunities available.
Additional expectations / opportunities
Paid teaching opportunities (Adults & Children) are available and optional. Residents work approx. 10 hours per week in the areas of studio maintenance (equipment maintenance or inventory needs), gallery installation, Artists-In-Schools/community outreach programs, book/supply store general needs, conference assistance, and public relations. This schedule is organized at the beginning of the resident calendar year to allow communication and time management. Residents have the option of hosting open studios during the fall, spring or summer workshops. Christmas open house activities include a resident open studio session. Optional donation of one piece completed during the residency program to Arrowmont’s permanent/traveling collection.
