Join us for an informational webinar on Thursday, December 1st at 11AM when we'll provide an overview of all of the California Arts Council's 2016-17 grant programs, highlighting some changes and new additions to our grant offerings. Our programs staff will review the application process, provide some tips for grant writing success, and answer questions from the public. Click here to register. The webinar will be archived online for those who cannot participate.  Six Programs Accepting Applications Now! Six of our grant programs are now open for applications - with eight more opening in the near future. As a result of increased state arts funding, this year we'll award more grants than we have in 13 years as we support projects in 14 unique grant programs. In fact, we may award as many as 1,000 grants this fiscal year... that's more than triple the number of grants awarded annually in the past! On top of that, the maximum grant request amount has increased in nearly all our programs. The following grant programs are currently accepting applications: ARTISTS ACTIVATING COMMUNITIES: Up to $18,000 for artist residencies in community settings. ARTISTS IN SCHOOLS: Up to $18,000 supporting students' overall well-being and academic achievement through arts engagement. New categories offered this year supporting PreK, field trips, afterschool and summer programs!  CREATIVE CALIFORNIA COMMUNITIES: Up to $50,000 a year for small and mid-sized organizations and up to $75,000 a year for large organizations to support collaborative creative placemaking projects. Now a two-year grant program! LOCAL IMPACT: Up to $18,000 for arts projects in underserved communities. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND CONSULTING: $1,000-$5,000 for capacity-building professional development or consulting projects for arts organizations. DEADLINE: Dec. 14th STATEWIDE AND REGIONAL NETWORKS: Up to $30,000 to support culturally-specific, multicultural, and discipline-based statewide and regional arts networks and service organizations. ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM

The current Class Catalog can be downloaded here. Fall semester offers classes and workshops in Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts from September 10th through December 17th. If you are an instructor in Dance, Drama, Music, Literary or Visual Arts who is interested in teaching at the Grand, the Contract Instructor Handbook can be downloaded here. Gallery opens 1 hour prior to most Presenting Season performances in the theatres

VISITATION & PARKING 
Visitors may be dropped-off and picked-up in the loading zone at the front entrance on Central Avenue. Free parking is available on nearby streets and public lots at 6th Street and Central Avenue. Disabled parking is available on 7th Street.

SPECIAL NEEDS 
Tours are available, and private and group gallery talks can be arranged. The Galleries are accessible to persons with disabilities and patrons are asked to call ahead to address special requests and needs.

Photo credit: Michael Moser.        Touch On: Aesthetics in the Art, Politics and Ontology of Touch  Opening reception Thursday, December 1, 6–9pm Take a deep dive into the multifaceted nature of touch! Curated by James Fleming and Kelly Lovemonster, Touch On is the first exhibition in the 2016–2017 season of the SOMArts Curatorial Residency. This group exhibition challenges viewers to reconsider preconceived notions of the meaning of touch through sculpture, installation, performance, traditional art and digital mediums.  This Thursday, December 1, help us activate Touch On with a free public reception featuring performances by acclaimed international performance artist boychild and Bay Area luminary Dia Dear. Both artists will compose performances that will culminate in their own visual ephemera. Expect to be challenged by large dynamic pieces and small contemplative works all exploring: what is touch and what does it mean to be touched? The drawings are made with an archival artist's crayon called a litho crayon. These dense, black crayons are especially designed for sketching directly on a lithographic stone, screen, or grained paper master for lithographic printing. Ideal for drawing on paper as well. They do not smear very easily.

Each is a standard size frame and you could even find an inexpensive frame in a drug store, photo shop or on line.
