Summer workshops are designed to help artists explore new media and techniques, develop a technical toolkit, and interface with working, professional artists who can offer guidance in the cultivation of a creative voice and individual aesthetic. All workshops are 4 four-hour sessions, or 8 two-hour sessions and cost $250 per registration; $200 for members and students. Some workshops provide opportunities for students to enroll in 1 workshop session of their interest at the rate of $40 per session.
All workshops blend creative disciplines and are designed for hobbyists, creatively minded individuals pursuing education or a career in the arts, or amateurs of any skill level. All ages are welcome. For more information, please contact education@sandiego-art.org or call 619.236.0011.

PARKEOLOGY: DRAWING, DOCUMENTING AND TRACING THE SECRETS OF BALBOA PARK
|
Combining observational drawing, writing, collage, photography, and archival research we will explore hidden layers of lesser known archives, buildings, basements, and gardens of Balboa Park. Parkeology explores the idea of field work as an interdisciplinary creative practice. What does field work mean if you are an artist, writer, or anthropologist? Each practice has it's own methods that we will draw from, with the end goal teasing out a hidden layer of Balboa Park that interests us personally. We will meet with botanists, park rangers, and historians to learn lesser known aspects of the landscape. Ultimately, participants will heighten their powers of creative and critical reflection through creating a book of drawings, interviews, and writings that combines poetry and documentation. Personal projects in proposed alternative mediums will also be supported.

EXHIBITION: FROM IDEA TO INSTALLATION WITH DANICA MOLENAAR
|
The purpose of this workshop will be to highlight the steps involved in the creation of an exhibition. It will introduce examples of well-known art exhibits, art spaces, various artists' cultural and historic influences, their processes, and their individual work. This will parlay into ongoing critical discussion of the students' own work, and most importantly examining their pieces as a 'body of work'.
Utilizing the historical/conceptual concepts discussed, the course will guide students through different approaches to creating and exhibiting their work as a cohesive body. Whether as a portfolio or an exhibition, students will be encouraged to express their attitude about each others' work in a critical setting, and learn to articulate their own concepts as well.

CELLPHONE MOVIE MAKING WITH DON PORCELLA
|
Students will learn how to use their cellphone to make movies. Inspired by the accessibility of high quality cellphones this class will enable students to storyboard, shoot and edit movies for a variety of venues. Students will prepare movies between 60 seconds to 5 minutes so that all students can enter the mobile film festival in April 2015.

THE RADAR PERFORMANCE ART WORKSHOP
WITH JOSE HUGO SANCHEZ

The Radar Performance Art Workshop is one of performance art and will focus on the artist participant as a site of creation, reinvention, memory, and activism. This workshop will be given by Jose Hugo Sanchez, and has a backbone of anthropological, ethnological, technological, and experimentation.
Participants from every level of artistic experience and practice are welcome to enroll; the goal is to have performance art become the common thread and language for the multidisciplinary community of artists.
Participants are exposed to different methods and eclectic combinations of practice, borrowed from multiple traditions such as experimental theater, contemporary dance, the Butoh and Suzuki methods, living theater, and performance games. Issues of cultural impact and political pertinence will be addressed throughout the course. Participants must be comfortable with group work and collaboration. The workshop is extremely fun, but also physically and intellectually rigorous.

EXPERIMENTATION ACROSS MEDIA WITH JON PUCCI

Jon Pucci is a multidisciplinary artist who graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with a BA in Studio Art. He most commonly works with water or oil based media. This workshop will trace the development of an idea or a portfolio through different techniques, processes, and materials, in order to help participants develop a unique aesthetic and creative voice. They will then apply their learning to the development of a portfolio or a specific body of work for presentation or submission for residency programs and juried exhibitions.

TIE, FOLD, WRAP AND TEAR: A STUDY OF PROCESS WITH MATTHEW MAHONEY
|
Fly tying is a sculpting technique founded in the feeding habits of fish. Fly tyers attempt to mimic aquatic insects that fish feed on in order to lure fish into consuming their elaborately constructed hooks. Session 1 will briefly look at the practical use of fly tying, and focus on the divergence from practicality to sculpt insects, flora and fauna. These small-scale sculptures will still act as lures, but pursue piquing human fascination, rather than hungry trout.
Participants will then have the opportunity to develop their practice further and explore techniques using cardboard, paper and other found objects. Origami and piñata building are centuries old practices, whose use and creation have changed significantly in recent decades. The workshop continuation will explore similarities between the techniques and their materials, as well as the practical building techniques of both used for assemblage in contemporary sculpture.

COLLECTIVE ZINE MAKING WITH NINA PREISENDORFER
|
During her residency, Preisendorfer will also conduct a zine workshop in conjunction with events at SDAI. In this workshop, participants will be able to create drawings and narratives that relate to their experiences and impressions of Balboa Park. The collected material will be transformed into a zine, offering a personal voice to Balboa Park's over 100 year history.
