September 26 - 28
Tom Fruin / Kolonihavehus / Dumbo Arts Festival / Brooklyn Bridge Park / 2014
We are happy to announce Tom Fruin's Kolonihavehus, a public intervention and extension of the artist's current solo show COLOR STUDY, as part of the DUMBO Arts Festival.
Debuting tomorrow, Friday September 26, Kolonihavehus,
named after the Danish word for "community garden shed" will be open to
the public at 6p in Brooklyn Bridge Park. This 12 feet square and 16
feet tall sculpture continues the ICON Series, where banal or overlooked
mementos of urbanity are illuminated via careful, colorful compositions
of salvaged materials. This is the first time this steel and salvaged
Plexiglas sculpture, made in collaboration with a performance group from
Copenhagen, will be seen in the US. It has already been exhibited
extensively throughout Europe in Vienna, Prague, Denmark, and Sweden.
Dumbo is already home to Tom Fruin's Watertower. The Watertower
is viewable from the Manhattan Bridge and all the trains that run
across the bridge, but never before has a work from the ICON Series been
placed in the US in a public space, and Kolonihavehus, will
be the first time you can get up close and personal with the ICON
Series other than Tom's current solo show COLOR STUDY. A kaleidoscope of
color by day, Kolonihavehus also incorporates a computerized lighting system to keep the brilliancy going 24/7.
The Festival will also include a performance called Reflection with CoreAct from Copenhagen. In Reflection, two performers will inhabit the house portraying everyday dilemmas and lifestyle paradoxes using lyrical
strings of words that reverberate throughout the structure and provide
an intimate experience against the backdrop of shared, communal urban
space.
