NEW ON VIEW Matisse Jazz Opens today through September 22 In 1943, French artist Henri Matisse was 74 years old and recovering from cancer surgery when he began the portfolio that eventually became Jazz. Unable to paint or sculpt, Matisse instead cut out forms from colored paper and arranged them into collages. His assistants then prepared the collages—most with a circus or theater theme—for a screenprint process characterized by crisp lines and brilliant colors. On view are all 20 prints from the edition of the portfolio held in the Gunst Collection in Special Collections at the Stanford University Library. |
