ArtSpan believes that every child deserves access to arts education.
Donate to
Art for City Youth today. You can make these stories possible:
"The students were always so excited when (Teaching Artist)
Russell Herrman would walk in on Wednesdays... He accepted their
effort at whatever level they were at... They felt free to explore their
creativity without feeling they were doing something ‘wrong'."
-Mrs. Mansfield, 4th grade teacher at Bessie Charmichael Elementary
Since 2001, ArtSpan's Art for City Youth program has connected
professional artists with under-served youth in San Francisco. Each year
Art for City Youth provides over 650 public elementary school students
with in-class arts education, guided learning
in Visual Thinking Strategies, and interactive tours of the SF Open
Studios Exhibition. Art for City Youth connects children with art in
their neighborhood fostering the next generation of San Francisco
artists.
"I have never had a job that has felt so meaningful...Two days out of the week, I wake up with a smile on my face."
-Teaching Artist
Laura Williams
Art for City Youth
trains artists to be educators through professional development
workshops,
trainings, and classroom support. Laura Williams is a professional
painter who found an undiscovered calling in the classroom. She is one
of several teaching artists who have used their experience with Art for
City Youth to pursue other career opportunities
in teaching and education.
