Christian Fagerlund [christianfagerlund@gmail.com]
My friend Christian Fagerlund sent me this invite tabout some workshops. If you wanna learn from a super smart, super talented, and super kind man ya gotta take his classes!
I am pleased (and super excited) to announce two separate workshops for June. With both workshops:
-All levels are welcome (beginner/intermediate/advanced)
-You can work with any drawing/painting medium (although demos will be geared towards oil painting)
-Class size will be small (8 max) allowing ample time for one-on-one critique with individual students.
-Classes will take place at my Oakland teaching studio:
3145 Maxwell Ave, Oakland, CA 94619
-Enrollment starts Saturday, May 19th. First come, first serve. Class size is limited, so be sure to email/call (510 379 8192) on Saturday to reserve your spot. Once
you’ve received confirmation from me that
you have a spot, you can then send in your payment to confirm your
enrollment. Please send your check (payable to Christian Fagerlund) to
3298 Madera Ave, Oakland, CA, 94619.
1. Still Life Painting
In this workshop you will spend seven sessions exploring traditional still life painting methods. You
will have the opportunity to set up you own individual still life:
addressing your personal objectives, choosing objects that you are drawn
to, and composing/lighting them as you wish. As an option, I can also set up a still life for those of you who prefer.
We will focus on the following principles:
-Drawing – shape, proportion, measurement techniques, materials
-Poster/Color studies – seeing the broader value/color relationships
-Composition
-Underpainting techniques - grisaille and imprimatura
-Seeing 2D vs. 3D (i.e. flat shapes vs. illusion of form)
-Advances oil painting techniques – opaque color vs. glazing/scumbling
An average session will consist of:
-A lecture/demonstration illustrating the variety of stages of making a finished painting
-3 hours of studio time, with individual critique and demos
Friday/Monday evenings, 6:00 – 9:30 pm
June 1, 4, 8, 11, 15, 18, 22
Cost - $400
2. “Quick”-pose Figure Painting
As most of you know, I am a strong advocate of longer poses with
the figure (so that the student has the time to fully explore the
subtleties of both the human form and painting technique). That being said, some of the most beautiful and
expressive figurative works are quick, spontaneous, simplified, abbreviated yet complete. In
addition, most opportunities to work with the figure (whether it be on
your own or with groups) give you 3 hours max to make something “good”. Versatility
is an incredibly useful trait to have as an artist. You
want to be able to take advantage of whatever scenario you find yourself
in – whether that is 40 hours with a live model, or sketching
bystanders in public.
In this workshop we will spend four sessions painting from four different models. With each model, we will work with different pose times, ranging from 3 hours to 20 minutes.
We will focus on the following principles:
-Efficient methods for getting correct proportions
-Pacing – planning your technique and approach
-Color Theory
-Value (light vs. dark)
-2D mapping – looking at more intuitive ways to see shape/proportion
An average session will consist of:
-A group lecture/demonstration illustrating that session’s lesson
-2.5 hours with the model, during which I will provide individual critique and demos
Saturday mornings 10:00 – 1:00, Tuesday evenings 6:00 – 9:00 pm
June 9, 12, 16, 19
Cost - $250
Thank you all for your interest in the workshops. I hope to see you this Summer!
Christian
P.S. I will be out of the country from June 23 – July 27. There will likely be 1-2 more workshops during the beginning of August. These summer workshops will be the last ones until next summer (my work load at
Ohlone and UC-Berkeley Extension is doubling next school year).
