So, I teach my students this art historical idea based in Ernst Gombrich's theory of schema and correction. It's sort of like Darwin's theory of evolution in art. I teach them that most artists start with a schema such as this awesome painting by Caravaggio called the "Calling of Matthew."
Then sometimes they can add a painting like this, John Singer Sargent's portrait of Madam X.
And then make another painting based on the two. In this case my painting (Kenney Mencher) "The Calling of Marc." oil on linen canvas 48"x60"
